    Slow Internet

We've had terrible internet here for a little while, and just had a call from the provider to say that it appears to be WSUS is constantly connecting to an update server therefore timing out our connections. Thing is WSUS is not installed on any of our servers.

Can anybody provide some troubleshooting steps for me so I can possibly figure out where this is happening?

Sounds like a bluff... anyway, perhaps they mean normal Windows Updates on your client machines. Disable it completely in Group Policy for a bit and see if it makes any difference.

What a crock of ****. Assuming it's not someone with an ill timed April Fools I'd ask just how a single application can time out the entire connection. HTTP is not a linear queued system of requests, it's a parallel system for multiple transactions and packets.

I'd start raising hell were I you.

Well, in any case is there anything I can do to see if there is any one thing using a whole lot of bandwidth?

I agree with contink seems like your provider is full of **** and is trying to palm you off with lame excuses.

You haven't said who you provider is or how it you connect to the internet.

Does your internet gateway/modem provide you with any traffic analysis?

You may want to check this out and see how much traffic is running across its external interface, if its very little and the internet is slow then its more likely to be a problem with your provider and not any of the equipment you have on site.

    Hope this helps.

Hub + laptop + wireshark between your final outgoing point (ADSL router etc) and the rest of your network - or ntop in the same position if you're feeling lazy
