hi
we are trying to get smoothwall to act as a internet filter/router,
we only want certain machines to have to go through it.
Our setup is like this
Firewall(internetlink)------core switch
all other switches go into the core, what we now need is the smoothwall to go in place like this
firewall(internetlink)------core switch-----smoothwall
we want to force certain machines to go via the smoothwall for internet only traffic.
We basically want it to act as a internet filter/proxy
is this possible and wants the quickest way to do this.
we already have a dhcp server, and we have vlans so its tricky

Id have a look for a different product. SM is ment to sit inline with your router, well it is your router... AFAIK a standard build SM is not able to do what you want as you cant have 2 interfaces on the same network
I use the Advanced Proxy Add-on http://http://www.advproxy.net/ for SmoothWall.
You can add the IP addresses or MAC addresses of the machines that you do not want to use the proxy to the unrestricted addresses section.

You can probably fudge it with express, but it will not be fantastic, and not over-pretty either
I'm not being biased when I say you should check out our commercial web filter which is designed for this situation (and is a serious ugrade over the free version + ay add-ons). However, if you wish to persist with the free varint, I will have no option but to offer a spot of advice
Try 1-NIC (Green) but give it a default gateway so the www proxy can get to the net (or an upstream proxy will do) and ue proxy settings in AD to decide who gets filtered.
We have smoothwall express 3 hanging off the network (ie: attached like a normal client computer) and are using it purely for its web filtering capability (dansguardian addon). We just amend the proxy settings on the client computers to point to it, which are locked down, and it works fine.
We are using red and green interfaces, both of which are just connected into the switch (ie: it isn't acting as a "via" route for traffic, rather a "go over there" instead). Didn't work when we just used 1 network interface, which is weird, as we're not using the firewall/routing on it, so no idea if our setup is recommended, but has worked fine for the best part of 6 months.
update
have successfully install sw3 and install advanced proxy 2,
have install urlfilter as well.
I can configure advproxy via the web admin perfectly well but
when I click on the urlfilter tab the browser just hangs and does not load the urlfilter page.
I have enabled the urlfilter in the advanced proxy page, am I missing something simple here

Does anyone know how to assign a default gateway for the green nic
You are going to be much better off searching for or asking these questions on the smoothwall forums than here.
The community are pretty good but just make sure you do some searching first or you'll get the standard RTFM response.
