Its the actual modems were the compatability issues are, the wont support anything other than the routers they supply... even asking about a 3rd party one is a no go you will not get an answer, if you go into Currys or PC World here you actually get told 'dont buy our routers if your a KC residential customer as they wont work properly'

    It's that bad!

Tried that one a while back on one of KC's business connections.... it didnt go too well !!. It's the way the the modem authenticates over the network, It's PPPoA but not done at their end in the traditional sense of a standard PAP/CHAP handshake as you need other settings to be absolutely correct before it will connect, there's other factors too.

    Cheers though.

You able to check what other settings there are on ya router they provided or is it totally toasted ? Maybe get them to send you a replacement router and see what other settings there are. Aren't there VC and other adsl settings that you need ?

Yeah theres all sorts of settings to do with VCI settings etc, however it's not just those settings you need to make a non KC router work, they add whatever they add to the firmware for authentication etc - the network they use is really old and hasn't been upgraded, even the fiber network... it's just replaced cable from copper to fiber they havent put any new kit in or upgraded anything it's just all ... old. So this is why they load custom firmware.... so that routers work on their network properly.

It's a PITA. - You can get some routers to work perfect, Draytkes work as do technicolor tg670's.

Well to my existing customers they can have a Draytek 2820 for £10 or a 2830 for £50 + p&p

I'm out all day and tomorrow so will get our operations ladies to check how many I have in stock at the moment. The 350 will be coming back over the next 6 months.

I'll think of a price to none Schools Broadband customers soon

Heck if you move your school broadband connection to us I might just throw you in a spare one anyway

    Thanks

Have done this, however if you use a third party router with the manual settings often you get things like random disconnects, alot of people are experiencing this issue at the moment. For some reason with the non KC routers, customers get drop outs and sometimes don't come back on, it happens completely random. As far as I know it's not just a couple of customers experiencing this.

    Netgear DG834G

I've been using this router on my KC connection for getting on for 10 years now. Never missed a beat.

It's survived 4 house moves around the city of Hull, which has seen connection speeds up to the speed of 20meg downstream.

Your lucky getting those speeds, I barely get 8-9 and I'm close to the Exchange in Hessle. Where abouts in Hull are you ?
