Got bloke coming from county to Install smoothwall!! Portal Page?!?!

    Hey Guys

So I have someone from county coming in today to install Smoothwall Internet Filtering on a server for us and set it up in the same way that county has it. Though one of the main things I want to get working is that I want Smoothwall to detect Mobile devices, not laptops or any kind of computers only Mobile such as an iPad or Personal Phone and then once they connect to show the user a page before they can go on the internet asking for a User Name and Password so we can still monitor what the kids and staff go onto when they're using an Ipad for instance!

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Alex

Yup - a separate SSID for these devices connected to a separate VLAN with the Smoothie set as the Captive Portal.

May be simple or a lot of work depending on your existing setup though!

Using Smoothwall as the default gateway in bridged mode for the BYOD network on its own SSID and VLAN is by far the best idea, to go one step further I would say let smoothwall authentic the users by IP (given that on its own VLAN you should use its own DHCP range and subnet). And then install NPS (RADIUS) on a server and use that as the point of authentication. We do this in a slightly more complex way for all our wireless devices Staff / Student / Guest and it works really nicely. Stops them bypassing the filtering and removes the need for a proxy settings as the smoothwall is the gateway.
