Moving External DNS server to Janet? or another provider

    Hi all,

We have an old Windows 2000 Server being used for external DNS. No idea why it was put in, seems silly that all requests go to this server, then back out again only to come in a second time.

I'm 99% certain that most companies just use the company who they bought the domain from to do external DNS resolution.

anyway, I've been tasked at getting rid of this server and moving all the records to an external company to manage.

Has anyone done this before, I'd have thought it would be pretty simple? If so, can someone recommend me a good company.

Assume everyone buys their domains from Janet? Would like to know how other schools, colleges, universities go about handling external DNS records.

    Thanks!

What sort of domain is it? Most people who provide the domain will do DNS for no extras. For example 123-reg do ours.

    Thanks...

I've not worked here for very long so still getting to grips with the network. It's 10 years old and the external domain is the same as the internal one.

Maybe I am over simplifying things, but isn't it just a case of finding out who registered our domain, sending them an export of our external dns records and getting them to do it all?

Is it a .sch.uk domain? Or .com .co.uk etc?

I tend to use cloudflare.com to host dns (it does more but their dns is rock solid) and its free.

We had exactly the same situation, moved them to JANET, was quick and painless.

    Thanks everyone

    It's a .ac.uk

I'm tempted to go with Janet as it's quick, easy and free. Just need to do some comparisons with say Amazon Route 53.
Trying to get anything out of Amazon is a nightmare, they don't seem to want to talk to anyone....and their pricing calculator is a science!

Just found this and thought of this thread as a reference for speed, cloudflare is free as well.

The problem with Cloudflare is their free package offers no SLA and nowhere (that I can see) does it tell you how many DNS queries you are allowed per month

DNSMadeEasy looks the best to me. $60 a year, 10 million queries a month, 100% SLA else 500% credit, 24/7 support!

It used to be that Janet required you to host Primary DNS on your site which is probably why the server exists. Janet administer all .ac.uk domains.

    Take a look at https://www.ja.net/products-services...ame-allocation
