The Secondary across the road is paying for a 40meg connection through the LEA but find it slow going at times.
I think everyone has gotten used to poor connections. Unfortunately we are using more and more web based services so the problems are impacting more than they used to.

are you and they able to SNMP monitor the outgoing port? Or a switch connected to the outgoing port? Quite often you may find that you are actually maxing out the line. 40Mbit is a bit on the slow side for a secondary school now.

That's a good suggestion from Dave - even if you can't monitor SNMP locally, your LEA should be able to provide you with this data. Make sure you get a good sample across several full days to identify if there are any trends where usage is high. I've had issues in the past with dodgy WSUS updates maxing out the connection.

The guidance document can come across as technical but it is broken into sections.
The important place to start is to look at the educational aims, then the functional requirements, then the technical specifications.
The technical nature has made some of it easier for schools to spot companies trying to blag or massage the facts by using technical jargon when it is not needed.
The document is released as Creative Commons so should members chose to create an LA/region agnostic version then that might be helpful in the future (just remember the attribution please).

We moved from our LEA and not looked back. I can recommend EXA Networks their Internet provision has free filtering & service is fantastic.
