When re-connecting following our recent Internet outage, I noticed that the router itself says that we are connected at one speed, which is also the speed BT say we have, but the likes of speedtest.net come up with something quite a bit lower (around 80% of the speed quoted by BT) - which is right?

Try downloading Windows 7 SP1 from Microsoft's servers or a large file from filehippo. They're a good indication just how fast your connection is.
