The other option (if using TMG) would be to install the Firewall Client which is on the TMG server as a hidden share if I recall correctly which should do the auth work for you until its fixed.
It is an MSI but its probably a bit like trying to knock a nail in with a post hammer.

hmm might give that a try. probably should wait for java update though cause i have sequence (app-v) IE with flash and java and silverlight and 5 million different web shortcuts and i don't want to do it again!

might use the tmg client anyways though.

do you know how it works on a technical level?

I believe it screws with the networking stack which sounds scary but I used it for years when it was ISA server without issue, you can also set it via a GP policy import too. Uninstalling forces a reboot and I probably wouldnt roll it out to the mass's without a good reason.

messing with the networking stack is okay as long as it works.

Does bring back horrible memories of xendesktop and the provisioning server client and the very specific order you had to install the client in.

If it is possible in your filter, exclude the java domains from authentication. It rarely plays friendly.
