Whole school network freezing
Help.............
I have had it up to here with this software, trialing some year 9's this morning accessing the program, there were about 40 students over 2 rooms, and the software kept freezing up after around 20 logged in. It even got to the stage where the entire network ground to a halt.
Why 4 oh why is this happening?
Re: Whole school network freezing
IT would help if you gave a few more details, like what software are you trialing for a start hehe :)
****EDIT****
HELPS if I look at the forum its in lol, my bad soz:)
Re: Whole school network freezing
RM & QCA actually recommend that you run it on a server that does little else, is not a DC and network use throughout the rest of the school is kept to a minimum.
Re: Whole school network freezing
well considering the forum is on the ICT KS3 Software, i would assume that that is the software i was trialing, the students are trying to log on the the DPS, the workstations keep freezing.
I go to the APS and try to log in, i get error:connection failed.
Its proving very frustrating as we are trying to get the kids used to the environment but can't
Re: Whole school network freezing
so i have to buy a specfic server for the task and make sure no one else is using the network?
Re: Whole school network freezing
We run ours on a seperate server that just services the DPS clients. Its a twin 3gig xeon machine with 4 gig.
What spec of server you running it on and what are the spec of your clients, also whats your backbone speed.
Re: Whole school network freezing
wouldnt bother my head of ICT had an email from edexcel saying at the moment we dont even have to do the test this year and 2008 wont happen
nice one RM

Re: Whole school network freezing
I'm not looking forward to the tests.
I know there was an article on BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6232207.stm about the tests. I think the head who said they didnt rate them highly was being VERY, VERY generous.
We are running ours on a DC which isnt ideal but unless RM or whoever else gives us a new server it will have to do. I think it's very badly designed and not appropriate for use in the school environment. I can imagine the announcement, could everybody please log off, stop using cmis / eportal, internet, CCTV, Content Distribution, etc..... year 9 are about to do their (soon to be optional or scrapped completely) tests.
I;ve not had an email from edexcel but i will speak to ICT Co-ordinator/Exam secretary and see if she has.

More accurately 'it may not' happen it 2008. It is being reviewed. Yes you can ignore it this year but if it does happen you'll end up playing catchup.
I'm no great fan of it but I'd rather have the option to try it and put my opinions forward than sit back and criticise something I know nothing about :)
Re: Whole school network freezing
i would like the option of being able to run this as well before next year, i dont want to play catch up but we are only a small school and dont have money to throw around on a dedicated server for these crap tests
Re: Whole school network freezing
we have ran since it was launced and if we dont have to do it then whats the point.
i have installed the new aps for this year on the server but not gonna waste my time upgrading the dps on the workstations till we know definitely whats happening.
otherwise teachers would be teaching towards something that might get pulled. :D :D

Yeah. I read that too and balked. We had just spent nearly ten grand on flashy new servers from Dell and weren't about to get another real quick. I would *prefer* to run it this way, but just can't. So our APS is on a main server and seems to be OK. What we did do was update the infrastructure (switches and cabling) and memory of the systems running the DPS software.
With the KS3 test you really have to look at the whole picture, not just the machine acting as APS. So your network might not have the capacity it needs during peak times to get the data across. Look at NIC speeds, cabling, switch capacity, whether your server is connected using gigabit or not, what time of day you are trying to run the test at and whether activity on the wider LAN is too much at that time etc etc. Blah blah.
You get the idea.
Or call RM and make them support their beast.

See the good news thread :)

We are just waiting for the teaching staff to decide what to do. Shouldn't be too hard as they like it less than us :)
Re: Whole school network freezing
there may be a warm front on the way
Re: Whole school network freezing
Been getting a slow network today - wonder if it is the DPS client.. will remove it till we find out more...
