Advanced Installer - How Clean is Clean

We've just purchased Advanced Installer Enterprise and are waiting for the monies to clear before we get our serial number etc etc. As such I am currently playing with the 30 day demo version.

Before I get going, can I ask - on our old RM network we had to build packages on clean machines. I understand the concept of this and why it is done. We never had any problems.

Now on a vanilla network - how clean is clean?

My thinking would be a standard Windows XP installation (connected to the network?) with all the updates. That would be it. Nothing else. Just Advanced Installer.

Can anyone confirm for me?

That how I do it, generally not connected to the network. If I need a connection (eg activation/registration) then I put AV software on but thats about it.

Actually, thinking about it there's some updates you might not want to include, such as windows search tool, or just disable it, or add it as an exclusion so you don't pick up anything it has done between scans. Also windows update itself should be disabled so you don't get the update log included in the msi.


Saves you having to edit the msi after.

Just remember with advanced installed doing a file scan before - install program - file scan after is just one way of creating a package with it.

Ah right, never used it actually, always used WinInstall LE with the scan-install-scan routine.

What else can you do with it and is it worth buying over the free WinInstall LE?

Get VirtualBox on your machine. You can have a completly clean virtual machine and after you've built the package you can just click revert to snapshop and it's clean again. Simples.

Have you given the AppDeploy Repackager a go?

Have a look at the advanced installer webpage I am going to buy it when funds allow.

Oh right I thought you had experience of using it.
Just wondering what you are going to use it for that you can't do with WI LE and Orca?

Agreed about the use of VMs, they are perfect for clean machines.
