Disk only backup
Our backup system is getting a bit long in the tooth for what we do and we're looking at replacing it.
We're pretty much set on moving our daily backups to Disk only, i.e a server with over 1tb of disk space, but it's our weekly/monthly/end of year backup's we're having trouble with.
We've been looking at an LTO-3 or 4 autoloader, but it's just coming up to expensive. Over 1.5k + Media costs + the license cost for updating backup exec is pretty painful and the network manager has suggested we look at moving the weekly/monthly/end of year to disk as well. Now these would either be external drives or a NAS somewhere with hot swap drives that could be removed and taken offsite for safety.
Has anyone else done this? I can see disadvantages of moving to disk only, i.e moving parts to fail, damage if moved etc etc, but then tape comes with a number of issues as well, eg storage, reliablity, media costs and the need for costly replacement drives if the autoloader dies.
If I were you I would go down the route of NAS Backup, it can be fairly cheap if you do DIY it.
Get an old box with 5 Insternal SATA ports and 5 bays for 3.5" HDD's
Upgrade the box to 2GB RAM, anything over 512MB will do.
Get 4 x 1TB HDD's
Get 1 x 80GB HDD
Download FreeNas and Install, setup the OS on the 8GB HDD then Raid the 1TB Drives in Stripe for 4GB of storage, or mirror the drives and get 2GB of Storage.
This is a good solution and is ALOT cheaper to do than a purchased NAS solution and it works just as well.
If you need any more info please ask me.
Im personally not a fan of the NAS Backup solutions at all.
Backup tapes ;)
Backup Tapes you have to change every day.
NAS you can leave it alone and it will work relentlesly all day and night.
You can even have NAS to NAS replication so you can have a NAS in each building for security again fire etc.
Its also easier to do quick recoveries. :D
NAS you cant carry out the door if there is a fire.
Autoloaders are good, put tapes in leave it, take a weekly tape home etc
Quick recoveries - Volume Shadow feature ;)
(Just used it now for a kid)
You do have a vaild point about carrying the NAS, we use tapes as well AIT 5, and also VSC for quick recoveries.
