Workstation Naming Convention

Just curious how other schools name their individual workstations. I have been continuing on from my predecessor. They had it setup like this, the computer in the psychology room is called PSY01. The two in Geography are GEO01 and GEO02 etc etc.

I have just ordered 22 new machines and am also taking this opportunity to asset register too (none previous - shocker).

The asset labels are stabdard foil based 'This belongs to blah blah school' with rolling numbers. Do I stick to the convention or now change machine name to number on asset register?!?

Interested how others do it and what problems you see for the above.

Looks absolutely fine to me. You can easily locate machines this way.

At our school we use GAS010, GAS011 Ect… we have excel sheet and access database to keep track all pc. Once new pc arrived to school it has number that ties it with S/N from supplier.
PC name or number stays with it until PC die / no longer work. This way we can easily move pc from 1 department to other all other detail stay same only department or room name change.

we use RoomNameAssetTagReimageDate

so LIB671OCT08 for a Library machine reimaged in October 08. That way we can keep track of when machines were last reimaged

We use DEPARTMENT-ROOM-ASSET
e.g.
GEO-R23-8001
The asset tags first digit is always the year the pc was bought.
We then use scripts that break this up into its parts and then we assign printers based on if your in GEO or R23 or on PC 8001.

We do the same as GAS with individual machine ID numbers. We track our machines location in AD where we have OUs set for all the rooms. Again like GAS the machine ID stays with the machine no matter where it goes. It makes it easier to track the history of the machine over the years.

We find once the ID number is written on the case, staff report issues with the machine serial number. Which means we don't even have to look up any details to be able to remote in. We have found it speeds up responce times, rather than the old location based naming scheme.

We use i/p address - we use static i/p. Details of all machines are maintained in a simple spreadsheet which is also our asset register. We have a stencil which etches the name and postcode of the school into the case and monitor. I use a permanent marker to write the i/p address on to the case, inside and out.

Think i'll rename these ones to their asset tag numbers. Will only need to look in excel to vnc. Also, they can be moved from room to room without a problem. I'll slowly bring the other machines in line with the new convention or just wait until they die, then rename when replacing.

We name ours like so for

Curriculum machines:
RoomName-Number
e.g. T1-05 or L5-20

Student Laptops:
Department-Lap-Number
e.g. Science-Lap-05

Staff Machines:
JobRole-OptionalNumber
E.g. Assitant-Head-02 or Data-Admin

Staff Laptops:
Staff Initials And Department Initials - Laptop
E.g. ABS-Laptop

Our PC's in rooms are numbered from the door, clockwise around the room (so we can easily find a machine), if there's an island we count it before we count any on the opposite side.

All our network points are also labelled like so:

Cabinet Number/Patch Panel Number/Socket Number
e.g. 4/3/16
So we can easily identify where the cable goes back to.

Essentially, we know where things are :P

As for serial numbers. We just have a spreadsheet with them mapped against, I wouldn't rename any machine to be any arbitary number or tag, a system where you know where things are works a treat.

Ive always done it roomnumber-machine number

So room 13 machine one would be r13-01 ..

Also the same with network sockets

We use roomnumber-desktop/laptop-model-number, so an exmaple of ours would be:
Desktop - RM01-DES-STS-01
Laptop - RM01-LAP-NX6-01

These are then linked to the manufactuers serial number and can easily identify where they belong and what model they are.

Staff Laptops TL-[Asset tag]

Curriculum: Roomnumber/name-01
Offices: TLA*-PersonsInitials
Laptops: LT01-LastnameFirstInitial
*three letter acronym, which varies according to location/purpose/phase of moon.

We did toy with asset #s but we find kids are more likely to tell us which computer they're having a problem with if they only have to remember a number from 1 to 35 in a given room.

Teacher PC's in classrooms take the name

RoomM19IWB - so I know they have a projector / IWB attached

Office PC's are

AFOffice - day to day user of the PC. It makes life much easier when VNCing for support calls etc.

We use room-os-id. So ours is ict1-xp01 or lib1-xp03. Admin machines are done by the function, ie bursar, finance, attendance, reception. Hope that helps.
