Which backup system is everyone using, we have been using veritas, but frankly arent overly fond of it and are considering a change.

ntbackup and NAS box
If you're considering a NAS box, you may find FreeNAS or Open Filer interesting.
Script driven NTBackup to a server and mirrored onto external SATA drive.
