Slow Mandatory Log In

I am using mandatory profiles with Windows XP and Server 2003. It works, however it is just slow. I've checked the size of the profile and it is around 1mb, so I didn't think that was it. I am using desktops connected to Ethernet, so no wireless issues.

I did some reading on here that said to use policy manager, so I tried that and found a delay in "Internet Explorer Branding" I have attached that picture. If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated. There is a delay of about 20 some seconds. I have all MS updates on both client and server.

Might be worth a quick check to see if the client has a list of profiles for all the users that have logged onto the machine.

If this list is quite long it will take a while for them all to be checked.

You could delete them all and see if its improved. If you're going to use madatory profiles you could set GP to delete the profile on the client as the users logoff and then the profile list won't increase.

If you look for KB941158 it'll describe the problem you're having with the IE branding.

I had the same problem after upgrading to IE7 and ended up writing a quick vbscript that ran on machine startup to apply the KB patch if it hadn't already been applied. I can send it onto you if you like.

When other domain users log in without the mandatory profile, it is a lot faster, around 8 seconds. There are a lot more policies that I have set on my student mandatory profile, but are those supposed to take that long?

I'm having similar profile speed issues here, what was the 'policy manager' tool you used to get those results you posted?

Did you still try the registry settings mentioned in the KB article to enable the hotfix?

I have to agree that it shouldn't be needed with SP3 and I certainly haven't seen it on any of the new machines that I've purchased since I stopped using the hotfix.

Does logging in with a brand new student user whose profile hasn't been fully created yet still have the same delay?

I have done the registry settings as mentioned in KB941158 but I still have the same problem. Once I type in the username and password of a student with a mandatory profile, it looks like it is going to go fast, but there is still around 20 seconds where nothing happens. I have all updates installed, my mandatory profile is around 1mb.... hmmm :o
