does anyone know how to create a delay of a few seconds before the logon screen appears in windows xp?
i'm hoping to use this on wireless pc's so they can do their stuff before the kids start bashing at them.

Set Wait for network in GPO see if that helps. cant remember the exact path but will look if you need me to.
Many network card drivers (especially wireless) have options for getting an IP first, checking a domain is available etc before attempting to log in. Certainly most of the new Intel drivers i've tried have these, it's just that they bury the setting away inside the config tools.
Alternatively just use the Wait for network in GPO, similar idea.
Good luck if you go for the ProSet Pre-logon - its a pile of shite.
I have found using the windows management for wireless quite good. In fact out of the 50 or so laptops I have never had a problem with it failing to logon to our domain.
