Adding extra HD to server
Hiya guys,
Got a file server, storing all students data that has <1% disk space left, just added another 300GB drive to it, must forgive me as i am a noob to this!
Its in the drive management as a new drive yeah, but how do i add it to the existing drive (which is spanned) without loosing any data?
Thanks
Mart
Re: Adding extra HD to server
I am by no means an expert on this but the way I did it to the RAID on my home server was by using the embedded SCSI utility on boot. It only had three slots for HDDs so i was moving from a mirror up to a raid-5 which meant backing up and re-producing the raid.
Re: Adding extra HD to server
Just looked at the disk management it says "Upgrade to dynamic disk", if i did this could i then add it to the existing ones
Sorry if im being a real noob ive never done this before.
Thanks
Re: Adding extra HD to server
Dont use dynamic, dont! Once in dynamic you cant revert
You can add a disk and then use a command line tool that expands your partition I believe but I cant remember its name.
Re: Adding extra HD to server
you are going the right way,,, I have just done it but for staff, I extended the partition for staff (when dynamic, is called Volume) by adding space from another volume (both must be dynamic) first make your new drive dynamic and then you can right click to your pupils volume (partition) and choose the option "extend volume" so you will go step by step wizard and you will select your new disk, note they are labelled as disc 0, disc 1 disc 2, etc. and then you have the option to select the amount of space you want to add.
