Tidying a shared folder
So in my infinite wisdom, i decided that one of my Performance management targets would to be find a way to organise what we call the 'S - Drive'. It basically contains a lot of whole school documents, policies, reports etc. Some documents in there are several years old.
How would you go about this, and then possibly set it up in such a way that it isn't a complete free for all?
Is there any free software you'd use or maybe some permissions?
I've done this a couple of times in a couple of different places now. The way that I've done it is to set up a brand new directory tree with self explanatory folder names with matching Active Directory groups. Only people who are members of the appropriate AD groups are allowed to write to the corresponding folders. Each folder has a quota to stop people going mad.
I've then mapped the old tree to a different drive letter and told people to go through their crap and copy what they need into the new structure and told them that they had X amount of time to do this. Anything which didn't get moved after this time would be archived.
There was a bit of pushback on this from the staff so you need to make sure that you get your SMT behind you and point out what a shambles your drives are at the moment.
