I use a simple spreadsheet with conditional formatting setup to alert me when things need checking like projector bulb hours + filters and health checks for non domain teacher laptops etc. Thinking of moving to sharepoint soon though and using alerts on there. Not sure if this is what you mean but I believe in KISS and this is about as simple as it could get. Works for me :)
If you use SIMS and FMS at school, you could always try the Equipment Register module that's a part of FMS. It also allows you to pull in any equipment you order through FMS which saves a bit of time. Plus it's there and ready to go.
Just getting back to this. Thanks to those who posted. Spiceworks is not ideal, we cant give people accounts without giving them access to other areas.
