Our Science technicians have transferred their old training videos to DVD and saved them in a *.vob format.
Apparently some of the teaching staff only want to use clips and do not want to scroll through the whole dvd to find them.
Has anyone any recommendations on what software (free and non *nix) the science techs can use to edit the dvds? They would prefer to edit using Windows Movie maker as they are familiar with this but are open to suggestions.

If you want to directly edit non-encrypted VOB content you will probably need to buy some software. I highly recommend Adobe Premier Elements 3 (probably around £50), then Nero 7 (~£40).
If you want to go the free route, I'm pretty sure you'll need to convert the VOB to MPG then to WMV. Have a look at this website: http://www.doom9.net/
Check the DVD Backup Guides.

You can use DVDx (free version) to convert them to AVI/MPEG.

I always tend to use SUPER in the school environment. It's free and can convert from/ almost any codec.
It can be downloaded from here at the bottom of the page.
I have converted lots of our media depts finalized 8cm DVD's (VOB) to WMV for editing in Windows Movie Maker.
