    Backing up a DC

    Hi all,

I want to make sure I'm backing up my DC correctly and just wondered whether people could confirm what I believe to do true....

We have 3 DCs on the network anyway so the chances of them all going are nearly nil but you never know. We use backup Exec 2010 and I just backup the System state on the main DC holding most but not all of the FSMO roles, is that enough? Plus I have heard that if you backup the system state you can only restore it to the same phyiscal machine is this true, or is it only true if your using windows backup? Should I if the worst came to the worst be able to install another different physical DC and restore the system state from backup exec to this theoretical DC?

    Thanks

I use Windows Backup, do a full system state backup to a remote Linux server.

That will be fine. If you need to do a restore you just seize the missing roles

It will restore on different hardware ok

System state plus using other DCs is the way I do it. If you do a bare metal backup, in theory you can only restore to the same hardware, but you don't need to bare metal it.

I have heard that bare metal will only work on the same hardware but since Our DC's are all virtual I don't think it'd make a difference.

I thought about doing bare metal backups on our DC's as they are Virtual, is this a tested or recommended option for Virtual machine based DC's?
