Automount public SMB share on mac for all users

    Hi guys,

Sorry if this isn't the right area, I have tried searching but couldn't find anything.

I have a bunch of macs connected to my windows domain. I have it up and running on active directory, everything is fine and dandy in terms of login/authentication (I think it was easier to connect the mac to the domain than a windows pc - but that's another matter...). It also pulls over the home drive and mounts that.

I will have anything upwards of 200 users logging on to these machines. Is there a way I can automount an SMB (windows shared drive) automatically for anybody that logs in? I can get it working by mounting manually - but i'd like it to be automatic. As in, user logs in and drive mounts to the public folder automatically.

I would also like to add a link to a webpage on all desktops... I can't see how to do this either.

Thanks a bunch and I look forward to your replies...

    Ben

Only just noticed the dedicated mac forum. Apologies - mods please move.

    Hi

I don't know how to add a link on the desktop, but if you want to add a shared drive for the users, go to Workgroup Manager > Login > Items, and then add it to the list. When they log on it should appear on their desktop like the CD Drive does when a CD is present.

Hi James, thanks for the reply.

I know how to do that, but that is on an individual user basis. As in, I would need to do that to each individual user. There are over 200. I wanted something a bit more generic. Something that mounts to the shared drive regardless of who has logged in.

    Cheers

Aaaaaah. Just seen the 'Add Group' bit. Assuming I can create a group and add users from AD and then assign the mount to the group - that should work. I'll have a play now.

    Thanks for the nudge...

Nope. Cannot add an OU to a group. Only individual users.

Also, I don't have Workgroup Manager as don't have OSX Server (just stand-alones).

    D'oh

edit: Just found a server admin tool download that I should be able to load onto standalone...

Thanks again James - sometimes a gentle nudge in the right direction helps

    Hi Ben

We have groups in Workgroup Manager, and we set the users by Security Groups in AD, not OU's. So in our group AppleStudents, in the members section we have security group "students" so they are added to it like that.

Do you not have a xserve then?

    Hope this helps
