Okay so we run a NetBSD installation for our proxy server this also hosts some of our schools websites. However we have a moodle installation on a windows server and when we use reverse proxying all of moodles pictures are missing and the layout is wrong et cetera does anyone know of a way around this?

Why not configure the Moodle URL to match the external hostname/URL that is accessible via the reverse proxy? Then create a DNS alias for that internally but pointing to the local internal IP.
Eg. internal clients will resolve vle.myschool.area.sch.uk => 192.168.1.100

All I needed to do in the end was change the path in the config.php to the internal IP address of the server so it's al working now thanks though!
