We use Thunderbird - IMAP compliant [unlike OE] as client

    Squirrelmail on the server

I use Horde and IMP for our webmail, excellent mySQL backend with PHP upfront.

If anyone wants to try it out give me a shout!

    Horde
    IMP

As for the server side of things, I use Debian, Exim (SMTP) and Qpopper (POP3)

    Re: Low cost email solution

Linux + mail server of choice + webmail frontend of choice would seem like a fairly cheap option.

I'd go for Linux + Postfix + Squirrelmail personally.
