Storage and backup requirements
Hi all, sorry if this has come up before (sure it has!)
Im putting a new domain in to move away from cc3. we will have approx 3600 student accounts (1800 X 2 (home dir & exam dir) and unto 300 staff accounts. How much storage is enough ?
Im working on the what if scenario / worst case situation here so your thoughts, ideas and experience would be great!
I propose :
Students Home Directories to be 1GB max (quota set to deny access if over quota) Student exam account (controlled assessments) 500mb and staff (5 gb each) again all quota's would restrict use if quota limit is exceeded. Then there is the shared resources issue looking at 2tb there.
any ideas how to accurately calculate the total space I'm going to need ? what do you guys do ? I'm looking at buying 30tb worth of storage to do backups on then offload Monthly backups to tape for archiving.
any help or ideas please let me know.
Ps how long do you retain data for ? (student and staff directories)

5th February 2012, 10:15 AM #2 We currently have about 4TB overall for Staff and Student Data Including Shared Areas. This is about full so i'm going to be upgrading shortly to about 10TB so plenty of future space!
Hold data for the first 4 months after a student has left (so until christmas - incase our sixth form students return late etc) then the data is archived onto a NAS box and then finally deleted after about 18 months.

The exam accounts are going to need less storage than the general accounts, but Google now offer people 10GB of storage each for free, so I'd expect to offer them at least that much. 10GB X 2500 accounts (pupils and staff) = 25TB, which you can fit into 10 3TB disks.
