Our teachers want to access and edit the student home drive shares. I'm not sure if this is something that they should do, but they want to mark student work this way. Does anyone have experience of allowing this. We have 1500 students and 150 teaching staff.

Year of Admission (2006 = 06) + First name + last name (In Caps to make it easier to distinguish) Students keep this throughout their school life. We do not normally get duplicates as the names would have to be identical per year.

    e.g. 2006 Pupil would be 06FredPERRY.

First initial + surname + year of entry (backdated for out-of-band entries). Example: Theresa McTest, now in Year 9, is TMcTest09. Easy enough for teachers to understand when trying to work out an email address or looking at LanSchool etc.

Duplicates are rare and are dealt with on a per-case basis, usually by adding the middle initial in as well, so TLMcTest09 for Tanya Louise McTest.

I'd prefer the year to lead with to make sorting easier, but this was the system already in place when I started, and something about a mixed system just seems so... messy.

Teachers are "staff".initial.surname, so their accounts stand out fairly easily.

I use whatever SIMS spits out, A+4 digit number at the moment, no duplicates as sims takes care of that, staff is initails at the moment, going to change that soon.

i let staff have read access to student drives but not wright, no one has complained so its going to stay like that for now, i block a hole host of file extensions at the server end for everyone

there is a push to use more of moodle to cut down on our printing costs and to me more eco.

We use date of birth followed by initials with a number on the end in the rare instance that we get duplicates.

With regards teachers accessing student work, we allow read access but don't allow them to write back to the folder.

First initial + surname + year they would have joined in Year 7. So this years Year 7 are jbloggs11. If there are 2 with same username one gets an extra 1 on the end.

Does make Year 3-6 usernames a bit odd though.

Like the majority, [YearJoinedInY7][First 5 Letters of Surname][Initial]

If there is James Bloggs and John Bloggs in one year then James will be 08bloggsJ and John 08jbloggs

Staff are initial.surname, again of there are two staff members that are te same one will have initial.surname and the other [initial][surname]

we use school initials BHS (brighouse high school) + year of entry + Form + Last Name (+ if needed initial of first name)
    Example
    BHS05BBerry
    Hope this helps

Same here, that also helps the staff to distinguish their year group. We found that duplicates are minimal and if we get one we add a number on the end.

We use year of entry + form group intial + last 4 digits of admission number so all are unique.

for example if we have 11V0101
