+1 for GLPI particularly if you use the tie in with OCS NG for the automatic inventorying

Hahaha @Soulfish is a MS SCCM guru so wouldn't use something that is about 100x as expensive as SCCM and I know he has had a price for it as he showed me it at the conference and I wasfor Kace

we have a custom made ms access asset database. It has evolved over the years, but has all our network gear, laptops, desktops, servers, projectors, etc all in it, and we have a couple of USB barcode scanners we use for easy querying.
It still needs a lot of work to make it completely perfect, but it does us,
SLT at my place recently purchased School Asset Manager needs some work doing to the interface to customise it for our requirements but it seems pretty good and offers a useful reporting and auditing feature for individual rooms.

We are looking at the Dell KACE thing. It looks pretty impressive to be honest, and although we are licensed for SCCM etc, we've just not had the time to invest my time into setting it all up. This KACE stuff is all preconfigured pretty much from what Im led to beleive? Will be interesting to have a look at it..
I looked into ManageEngine some years ago. Pricey but it did everything.
If you have an android phone you can use for school, try this.
Inventory Droid
It looks very cheap compared to all the big names out there.
It can save all the details to a networked pc in the school too.

Our department is looking for an inventory system that would allow us to check in and out some of our various equipment and also scan our network for devices. I've looked at several of the websites in this thread and they seem more like network scanners or simple asset managers. Barcode reading is optional, but it would be nice. Any suggestions?
I use Spiceworks - truly manna from heaven
and excel for reports to Finance and the local LA
Been through loads, IRM -> GLPI & OCS -> Spiceworks.
Gotta say spiceworks is the absolute dogs danglies.
I just whipped up a quick web application that uses PHP/MySQL to keep an inventory list. It can export the inventory to a CSV file when the auditors come round etc and provides enough reporting for our needs. I have no issues releasing it under a GPL licence for anyone to take a look at/use if they are interested. I found all the ones out there are far too complex for our needs, we simply wanted to store the item type, its smart water location, its asset management tag and serial number - none of the other fancy stuff other asset managers have.
I designed it with a mobile theme in mind as usually I do the asset management on my iPhone when I've got the kit in front of me instead of going back to the office and trying to remember the serial number or read it off my hand!

Sounds good @brad82 , sourceforge it
