    Re: Help Desk

I was suffering so badly from corridor attack I have had to implement an email based system.
We use First Class and I have had a conference setup for each school (I look after 8 primaries) where they post Work Requests and Faults and once I have got round to it simply drag it into an archive - all of this is public viewing- of course there is still the mobile for 'real' emergencies.

Its strange but since I have implemented this the 'faults' seem to be diminishing - I also posted a strong reminder of the 2 main user diagnostic tools
    1. Physical Error - have you eyeballed it
    2. Operator Error - have you done something to it

Seems to be working so far................

    Re: Help Desk

I found a straightforward system called "SomeHelp" (www.somehelp.net). Runs on Access 2000 but might solve the problem for those who don't have the time to set up something on a web server.
    .... and its FREEEEEEEEEEEE

The reliability of Access 2000 scares me.

    Re: Help Desk

Seems like a good product. The problem I've got is that I'm a fussy sod and I want something to do exactly what I want! Guess I really am just going to have to write my own. (Lots of PHP ones do what I want, but system restrictions rule out usable PHP systems. )

    Re: Help Desk

My school's part of a managed service and we have no control over the servers which means we can't install PHP on them. I've tried using my external hosting to run the PHP helpdesk but you've got to log in through our web filtering, then log into the helpdesk.

Basically, one of the functions I want is for staff to be able to open the helpdesk application/web page and be automagically logged in based on their AD user name. And because of the above setup, I can't do that. (And my teachers won't use a system that involves them logging in twice!)

What about a standalone Linux server? Recycle an old machine for example?

@RobC: You could setup a basic webserver on a machine that isn't one of your servers - it needn't be part of your domain but can still authenticate using LDAP and have passthru authentication from IE.
