Question How to determine physical server age in the datacenter ?

    Hi,

How to identify the server age (from the warranty) so that i know which one needs to be replaced / upgraded, it is all HP and SUN servers and I wonder what is the easiest way to get the server age / warranty status ?

apart from Spiceworks (if anyone know other option) I'm looking for the automated way because I got hundreds of servers in my current datacenter :-)

    Thanks

Don't HP do something similar to Dells Open Manage ie

    HP Insight Manager

    http://www.hp.com/wwsolutions/misc/hpsim-helpfiles/mxhelp/mxportal/en/index.html

Other then that it may be a case of having a list of serial numbers in a spreadsheet / database and calling hp and going through start and end date on warranty info or emailing them the said list and getting them to fill in the blanks for you and emailing it back to you ?

HP does have an online warrenty checker but I think it only does one at a time so probably not the best solution. The Insite stuff probably has it built in though.

Could you not just cut the HDD in half and count the rings on the platter?

If all the gear belongs to you then try your account manager - when we had a smaller-scale problem a while ago one quick phone call (admittedly it was a different vendor!) got me a nice spreadsheet with purchase dates, warranty expiries and the matching service tags.

    I like Hightower's idea better though :-)
