Staff access to student work folders
Do you allow Staff to access/modify students work in their personal folder?
We allow all teaching staff RO access to the students folders, and certain departments also get RW for marking etc. The students folders are accessed from links on the intranet.
We also have a VLE but this is used differently by each department.

No - We only give them read access so teachers can't be accused to editing coursework. Also they have links of there desktop and if an other student decides to be annoying could delete students work!

There are only limited staff here that have access to the student folders as there are only limited staff that need it .. they all have read/write permissions ..
If other staff found they wanted to access the student folders this would be done on Read Only access as just can't risk the work being deleted or altered ..

Not normally we feel normal rules of privacy should apply to pupils as well as others. But if necessary (eg to retrieve work from an absent student) teachers can request it. We have a user group which has RO access to all pupil folders and the teacher is added to this group and removed once they have finished.

Staff can access student home directories with RW access, it's what the teachers wanted / needed.
They were advised about potential problems and it was decided (by the SMT I suppose) that the risks were minimal so access was enabled.
They took the view that this sort of thing would not be acceptable / nomal in a business environment - but we are not in business.

We have RO access for staff - it needs to be requested by the staff member and then access is approved by the IT Manager.
As far as setup goes we have a GPO applied at the top of our staff OU - security group filtering makes it only apply to staff members who we put in our 'Read pupils folder' security group.
This GPO then makes a networked drive appear in my computer from which they can browse the work.
Main reason for setup was for staff to get ahold of work from students who were absent.

Yeah it was decided here that, on balance, the teachers would benefit more from being able to freely access their work. There is the risk of accidental deletion but its been very rare and as for privacy, well, they're only supposed to be storing school work in there anyway!
