We are looking for a system for SMS notification of any network alerts we get. Our system has monitoring solutions on/in it, but these only display via a screen to let us know if (for example) an access point isn't responding. Great whilst we are here...
What we need is an SMS alerter for out of hours, that costs nothing to run or implement
Or as near as.
Any ideas please?
Just as a footnote, we have ruled out being notified via email due to some staff not being able to receive email on their mobiles.

I presume both don't co-exist
Reliability is preferred.

30th November 2010, 02:35 PM #4 I would seriously doubt that would find a free to use gsm gaetway that would be reliable most of the free ones only allow certain numbers of texts to be sent and use other countries gateways.
You could do it yourself with a siemens gsm terminal and a pay and go sim card you would then have control over it.

30th November 2010, 05:52 PM #5 What do you use for monitoring? I have just ended up linking a bluetooth mobile with PAYG sim in it to our nagios box. Not that cheap, but very reliable.

30th November 2010, 06:21 PM #7 I beleve Twitter removed the sms alerts feature, though there may be other ways round that problem.

30th November 2010, 08:21 PM #8 I used to run nagios and a home-brewed SMS script via ClickSMS for, like, 5p a text. If you're grouching over that much (how much stuff are you expecting to spontaneously combust?) you have bigger problems...

3rd December 2010, 10:19 AM #9 Bulk SMS, Mobile Marketing, SMS Gateway, Email to Text, UK Business - Txtlocal does it for 4.9p per text with a minimum purchase of 100 credits.
They have an api and several code examples so you would be able to create a script to your liking from your alerting app.
Obviously this requires that the server can send stuff out to the internet still.
Otherwise you will have to go the phone/terminal route
