Out of interest fellow Network Managers
What are your yearly, monthly and weekly tasks, what do you have to contribute to the school planning and policy wise?
I have been fighting fires here for ages and am now starting to see light at the end of the tunnel (jus as BSF is rearing it's ugly head ironically) and am now starting to look at what things other schools are doing, to see if I should be doing those as well now that I am in a position to take a more proactive approach to things.

I get substantial input into ICT strategy here - but at my last school I, err, didn't.

We are just putting the finishing touches to a three year plan.
We will then have to make recommendations as to what happens at the end of the three years [Five year plan?]

It's good you now have a voice. As for tasks that is kind of broad, all I can start with is make sure your backups are good at the periods you have them set at.
Things I have learnt along the way which may help with management:
- if you're new to a role, get some quick wins under your belt to encourage confidence in you.
- if you want something offer 3 options - the Rolls Royce too expensive, the barely works budget, and the one you want.
- advertise your teams accomplishments in the school, but don't oversell. Rarely will anyone else do this for you.
Finally if Senior Management or the Head has a idea doomed for failure, just offer an alternative and calmly once only state your concerns then support their decision. If they go ahead with the idea and it fails they will know what your position was and will hopefully listen to you next time. No need to remind them of it though
