Hi. and thanks for "All" comments,

AS part of my signature says .."I'm self taught with no formal computer training so may need a lot of help"

I do not mind asking the basic of basic Questions from you "experts" as I know It also Helps Many Newbies And People coming up into the world of computing who may be doing your jobs when you retire.

I'm semi retired so this keeps my brain active and I have done loads of free help for our village school ,
al-though this school is not the "norm" Its given my daughter a good education as recognised by the senior school she now goes to in the nearby city.

Like Ben says its going to be the children and teachers who will benefit in the end when the system is up and running..

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    OK back to business.

I like to take the easy way out .

I have set all the users accounts up .. but I left out the passwords .
If I now go to these accounts and put something in them then 'tick' the user changes password at first log on.
Do you think that is my easy way to do this.

    From Michael.

So are a lot of people, but they have enough experience to professionally set up a schools network. Written paper qualifications mean nothing really.

Most 'newbies' are not trying to set up from scratch a network in an educational establishment they have at least some fundimental knowledge of Active Directory and Group policies to let them hit the ground running.

It may sound unkind but I say it to protect the professionals who work in schools for often shitty wages being tarnished with the branding as amateurs because Semi retired people like to get in over their heads, which it seems to me you are.

There is no benefit to the children or the teachers in a poorly set up network where people can do what ever they want, even more so when the kids are at an early stage of their ICT development.

I wish you all the luck in the world though.

This is by far the easiest method Mike

Depends on how you named your accounts, but myself I name the accounts a colour per year group, and set the passwords to the kids surnames.

Get a list of usernames into excel, then lay it out as SpuffMonkey said.

    net user blue1 Jones
    net user blue2 Jones
    net user blue3 Jones

    (you get the idea)

save it as a batch file then run on the server - very quick and easy.

@Disease: ffs give it a rest there is no way the school can afford professional help and I also believe that another member is giving up some of his time to help Mike out as well.

Just because Mike is a beginner at this that's not to say he's not going to end up with a nicely set up and working network/domain. We all started somewhere.
