how do you convert an xml file to xls

Our Brand New unitary Local Authority has sent out new pupil data for SIMS as an XML file. Is there an easy way to convert it to XLS?

Assuming you mean "...SIMS as an XML file...". You could write an XSLT transform to format the XML file however you liked, probably just as a simple bunch of columns with data in. You could then view this with a web browser and copy-and-paste to Excel.

Wouldn't it be easier to just open the file click, save as and then save it as the format you want it to be...

edit: posted it a second to late looks like the OP figured it out.
