IRM has an alert page, that does exactly what you want.
So I would suggest having a look at the code there and seeing if you can port it as a module to GLPI.
Failing that GLPI is Open Source, you could always contribute back.
Just to update everyone on this I have received the beta of this from Oz for MLH and it's working great.
I presume it will be in the next release which he is currently wrapping up.

Yes indeed it is. We are planning the release for this coming Monday.
attached is a slightly more indepth screen shot.
There is an auto 60 second refresh and the montior can be filtered to view open, in progress or on hold requests, perfect for having on a monitor or displayed via projector on a wall.

Is the asset manager coming anytime soon?
The BETA testers start testing this week with a view to having the Asset Manager out by end of August / start of September 09
