We have around 5 female staff members getting married in the next month or two. I know some of them will be keeping their maiden name for school but other won't. I know that user names can be changed but how does this affect exchange?
If i change a user name to the new married name how does this affect, permissions, group memebrships, exchange accounts/detaisl/address's
Can you give ne advice please.
Sorry if my questions are basic but i have not been a school tech long and the guy over me is no help at all and would rather ignore things than keep everything running smoothly.

Provided you're just renaming the account, it's the same user account (SID) and it'll be fine. You may want to stick an alias into exchange so that mail to maidenname@school and marriedname@school gets delivered to the same person (instead of bouncing).
I'd wait until after the honeymoon before you change them,

if you have any test user accounts on the system, try renaming one of those and see what side-effects, it has, on mail delivery etc.

You may also want rename any shares based on their username.
As pete says, an exchange mailbox can have more than one email address. You can add more on the email addresses tab of the Exchange Server version of AD Users and Computers.
You may want to make married-ame@school the primary address or the reply to will stay as maiden-name@school

we just create a new user name, copying all work files to new user account. Redirect mail to new email address, works for us.

Renaming has virtually no effect on the windows side, once you add the new exchange alias that should be fine too. You might want to rename the user home folder just so it still has a sensible name.
Edit: When I say no effect, I mean that it just works, never had an issue changing an account name or display names
