Just wondering how you lot format your usernames in AD
I was going to use firstname + middle initial + lastname (eg joezbloggs) until i had about 25 users over the 15 character limit
Now I can either change it to first & middle initials + lastname (jzbloggs), or amend the users who are over the number (most are due to double barrelled surnames, chav names or forgeign names)
thinking of going with the jzbloggs option as it may be easier to implement - though still got names that are too big - and maybe 1 or 2 duplicates!

Use Firstname.Surname here. (remove the first part of any doubled barrelled names) Works well and seems do reduce duplicates.

We do year of entry for that year group, surname, first initial
current y11 joe blogs = 01blogsj
works for us

I use numbers (4 digits only!)
here's my inspiration ;-)

We also have Firstname.Lastname. Last count, we have 2 users with the same name so RM CC3 by default appends a 1 at the end of duplicates.

We do year of entry + initial + surname.
Staff is initial + surname.

Same here, but with initial for a middle name

Re: Kids Usernames
We have first initial, last name, year of entry
So if Joe Bloggs were in our intake for this coming year, he/she would be jbloggs.06
We find the numeric extension quite helpful for when we're addressing particular year groups etc.
We get one or two duplicates each year, and solve that by inserting middle initial.
We have one name that would have been over the 15 characters so dropped the extension

We use year of entry - Form letter - school number
eg 03V1234

Sorry, but I must be having a bad brain day - what 15 character limit? Isn't it 20 in 2000 and up to 256 in 2003? :?:
Anyway, we currently use surname+forename+numeric for additional instances, e.g. Joe Browns x 2 = brownjoe1 and brownjoe2. We also define year groups for home folders and then again another naming structure for group description. On reflection, I think some of the earlier suggestions are useful and we may adopt a new approach with our summer upgrade.

I use first two letters of forename, first two letters of surname, day and month of birth eg. dasm0609. They can't forget it and they can't be recognised by it - remember if they will be using email with these names to check Becta's advice... I didn't want anyone to be able to work out users ages or names from thier username hence no full names and no year of entry....

Year of leaving + Surname + Initial
eg 07SmithB
Makes it easy to sort and group and then delete when they leave school.

Just out of interest, if your following the guidelines for e-safety, nobody should be able to identify a child by their email address, this includes their age, gender or name.
Therefore a 'safe' username would be something like: 07KM2 as it doesn't give anything away.

I know somewhere that uses four characters from each firstname and surname if applicable and the year of intake so Joe Bloggs Year 2000 would be JoeBlog00 Paul Bloggs Year 2004 would be PaulBlog04 etcetera!
