Basic Technician Interview questions...?
I've searched but not really found anything satisfactory. I don't want 'what is DHCP' or 'what's the difference between tcp and ipx'.
This level job they'll be replacing toners and mice, cleaning keyboards, doing inventory, helping people log in etc..

How would you clean up a toner spill?
If little Joe breaks a PS\2 keyboard what would you do?
Tip: PS\2 isn't plug and play
Might be be better of with helpdesk type questions. Just try and see if they take advice, kids, instructions etc well.

I was asked what the difference between a hub and a switch was.

I'd be focusing more on customer service skills than technical questions then.

As I have said in other threads the people skills are more important in that role as it is pretty easy to train people to do basic 1st line stuff. Much harder to train them in the right attitude if they haven't got it.

Good point, well made. Taken into account.
Our last guy was decent enough with people. Lost interest pretty quick when becoming permenant though!

i vote customer service type questions, we've all experienced irate teachers, + what computer stuff they do at home of their own volition, this will give u an idea of what else they might be useful for. its more reliable than words on cvs.

I remember when i went for a Trainee Tech job one of the questions was...
"Teacher calls and says they have a problem can you look at it, and then Head teacher says they have problem...Who would you help first and why?"
For some reason this always stayed with me.

Well obviously in an interview I'd be saying the Head, but we all know the teacher would be a lot more important

pfft, we all know the real answer is "how far down my cup of coffee am I....?"

Ok, the NM asked me to put some together for when we appointed our junior technician. Not all got used.
You’ve been asked to look at a black and white laser printer which has just has it’s cartridge changed. It’s printing out completely blank sheets. What would you check first?
A user is having difficulty logging on to a computer. What checks would you make to give yourself the information you need to resolve the problem.
A student is trying to download two files they’ve emailed from home to their web based email accounts. The first file is called SassyProject.xls and they can download it, the second one is called SassyProjectXxX.doc and it won’t download. What could be causing this?
You get back to the office three jobs have been added to the job sheet. There are;
• A pc in the 6th form area has a faulty mouse.
• A teacher can’t get their projector to turn on, so they can’t use the materials they’ve prepared for the lesson.
• A head of department wants some software installed on all his computers.
Which job would you start first?
A user is having difficulties with a keyboard. When they want to type a “ they get a @. What’s the problem?
A user is having trouble opening their file finance.xls in MS Word. What are they doing wrong?
What is a BOFH and how does it affect the work of an IT technician?

I wouldn't say the head. I would say it depended on the problem. If you had 1 teacher who couldn't teach the class because of the problem or the heads was one of not knowing how to insert a picture into word, which would you do? The answer you give is not right or wrong but you must be able to justify what your saying with a valid reason.

Indeed coffee is rather important.
I do like some of them KC, thanks a lot, keep them coming people, a lot better than things I've found online etc.
Now, if I knew for certain the applicants weren't looking on this website! ha.
