Having some aggro with our Sony SAIT drive at the moment dropping connections to the fiber HBA so we've only got 1 night's worth of backup being done by a USB 1TB drive (better than nowt that's for sure!)
Now if the drive can't be repaired or we can't get an order to the repair company what would you recommend next?
Current backup job is 400GB (admin network data), full backup done nightly.
We have the data stored on an HP NAS box, with replication to another identical one via DoubleTake (needs a bit of attention at the moment but basically works).
Also got a StoreVault S500 SAN box I'm going to use at the very least for a weekly disk backup via iSCSI. Downside is that it's in the same server room so if that room got damaged we'd be in trouble. There's nowhere else really to put a server so it's one of the problems with doing disk backups.
Another Sony drive would be about £4.5k (
) so that's the budget area we're looking at I guess. Current tapes can do 1TB compressed (500GB native)

28th January 2009, 11:36 PM #3 I was looking into getting one of these:
4-Port USB Network Server > Maplin
Insight UK - Belkin Network USB Hub - Device server - 5 ports... - F5L009UK
Play.com (UK) : Sitecom LN-308 USB Network Printer Server For All In One Printers : Computing - Free Delivery
http://www.alphamicro.net/components...~11~id~511.asp
so that I could hook up standard usb external drives up in the most distant of our cabinets so that there was some distance between the secondary backup and the server room. Not 100% sure whether it woulbe be fast enough to deal with out larger backup sets as it is 100mbit but if it is streamed from primary backups over the course of a couple of days it should work fine.
