Non-UK http proxy

This question is to do with personal use and not .edu related.

I subscribe to some UK based media content, which only allows me access when I am out the country, which is great for when I am traveling.

However, there has been a couple of times in recent months when I could really do with having access to it from within the UK.

Whats the best way I could get a reliable non-uk ip http proxy with enough bandwitdh for streaming media at ~ 1mbit/s.

Ive thought about renting a server somewhere in EU/US and running squid, but seems a bit overkill for what I want, for the short 90 mins I will be needing it once every couple of months or so.

Any suggestions what else I could do?

Ask one of the pupils which proxy service they are currently using to bypass your schools security

You need a non uk based shell account and then you can ssh tunnel your connection to it thus appearing to be from within the country you desire.

If it is only allowing access from outside the UK, I would assume that this means the license only allows its usage outside the UK. I don't think this would be an appropriate place to discuss tools for circumventing such licenses.

True, but most ex-pats use bittorrent as the quality/selection is better. :P

not quite sure if this is what you mean but to watch foreign tv channels i use hotspot shield

it puts an add at the top of your browser but is easy enough to close.

you start it up and it keeps Hulu, Pandora, etc. from recognizing that you are outside the US. Therefore, because the site doesn't know where you are from, it assumes the best and gives you access to all content

Thats pretty much what I was after, but was looking at getting something I could guarantee the availability and bandwidth.

Ill look into plexter's suggestion, can get a shell easy enough Ill just need to read up on how to get ssh acting as a http proxy.

In that the IPlayer license only allows you to download from within the UK and accessing it outside the UK is breaching the terms and conditions (license)? Yeah.

You're missing the point - you need to read the specific terms and conditions for what you wish to access. If they say anything about accessing things from outside the country they are intended for, then you would be breaching them by using a proxy of some form. If it is hosted in the USA, you'd even be breaching the DCMA at the same time...

Terms And Conditions

I signed up when I was living abroad, with a foreign CC, and foreign address. So Section 2.1, the only part that is of interest as far as I can see, is fine.

It says no-where else in the T+C that should be causing any concern. It doesn't say they need to be notified of change of address that I can see.

So having paid (substantially) for the content subscription, I want to be able to view it.

I think I'm within the T+C's...

Got myself an offshore shell account sorted, but cant find any documentation how to do this anywhere.. been having a play with stunnel but cant seem to figure it out
