DVD and VHS to digital and tagged served via server

Does anyone have a solution to the massess of old VHS tapes, new DVD material, downloaded MPEG's etc that get stored on teachers H:\ drives.

Ideally I want a solution whereby tecnicians/teachers can upload videos, tag them with keywords, put them in categories we define and then can search and play them back across the LAN.

Anyone looked in to anything like this?

I guess a youtube for the network...

People have posted about using media centre type servers to acheive this.
