I'm looking to set up an iSCSI disc using either FreeNAS or OpenFiler but can't figure it out. FreeNAS seems the easiest but everytime I try to create an iSCSI target I get error code 1.
It has no error if I create a read-only target : the error only occurs when I try to create a read-write target (which is what I need).
As for Openfiler I have no idea where to start as it looks completely different and can't find any guides.
Can anyone give some help for either?

What application is producing "error code 1"?

Is the volume / device you are trying to create a read-write target from writeable? If a device, is that device maybe already mounted somewhere else?
