We let kids change thier own passwords on the system. Just from home you have an unrestricted machine that you can use to hack.

Guys I have been working on a solution to allowing self reset of password. Basically when a user has access to the system they go to a webpage that grabs their login username they are then asked to answer 3 questions the results and their username are stored in a database.

When they forget their password they login using a reset password user who's shell is set to iexplore and the homepage is the reset password pages. They then type in their username and answer the 3 questions and if they answer them correctly is allows them to pick a new password.

    Re: Students forgetting passwords! Again!!

Problem we have here is that they have no concept of the term "security" no matter how many times we tell them, they keep telling their password to one and all!!

As a result we have instances of kids logging in as other kids then deleting coursework!!

the Teachers are asking for the ability to reset passwords, but since they cannot be trusted to lock their PC when they are not in front of it, I keep saying No on that basis alone.

I only allow kids to change their password via CTRL+ALT+DEL or by getting their teacher to log a call on Liberum.

    Re: Students forgetting passwords! Again!!

Ok guys I'll dig out all my code it's asp with an access database to store the details it's not finished as I haven't written the part that actually changes the password on the AD yet but if anyone else wants to help give me a shout and I'll send them the code.

Unless it can be hosted on edugeek and done as a group project etc...???

Plus it needs some prettying css etc... for the html if anyone is good at that.

    Cheers,

    Ben

I have a form on our Intranet that allows self password changes. Let me know if anyone wants the "Classic" ASP code. But this only works if they are logged in, just an anternative to RM's "Change Password" box.

When you say "logged in" does that exclude authenticated to an SSL page?

    Re: Students forgetting passwords! Again!!

Yup that would be the case. I have a reset password user who has iexplore set as it's shell with the reset webpage as the start page. This would also need to be restricted to that site only.

Alternatively you could just have a dedicated password reset station say in reception that runs the same thing so the students have to go and use it.

There are numerous 3rd part implementations of this but I wanted to do it for the crack and for free.

    http://www.protocom.com/html/securel...ord_reset.html
    http://www.avatier.com/products/PasswordStation/

    etc...

To get around the the 'giving password to all and sundry' problem how about the use two factor user autentication. RSA version is here. That might blow a few peoples budgets though!
