SharePoint Services 3.0

I am trying to install SharePoint services 3.0 on one of my test servers. The file downlaoded fine. As soon as I run the .exe, it starts off in the usual way and then i get this message :

"The installation of this package has failed".

What kind of help is that??? lol

Any ideas?

This is my first venture into SharePoint and so far it is not going to well!!!

Have you got .net framework 2 installed or enabled IIS?

I have got .net 3 and IIS installed, but nothing. I am going to try a restart and then see.

Nope still the same error message. This is very strange.

Is there anything else that I need to configure?

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

A few things just to check - these are required for WSS3 to be installed.

Windows Server 2003 SP1
enable IIS
.net framework 2.0 <- must be installed after enabling IIS
enable asp.net in IIS web extentions.

Do you get an error message in the event log?

Welcome to Sharepoint - this is one of the many frustrations I've had with it (and Search Server Express which is basically sharepoint!)

It will have written a log file (probably in your temp folder); have a look in there and see if there's anything of more use and try googling on that - I did find what was wrong (I've had this several times with different problems each time!)

Can't remember but don't you need to run aspnet_regiis.exe from the .NET v2 framework folder before installing Sharepoint 3.

When I set up my test Sharepoint server I:

Installed Windows 2003 Enterprise R2
Installed SP2 then all updates
Activated IIS, default settings
Installed Sharepoint from the Windows 2003 CD (disc 2)
Ran Windows updates again

The version that comes off the CD on Windows 2003 R2 is WSS2

Do you have it working yet?
