There is a MAC Address scanner and you can use that along with a mac address to wake up or shut down machines, now this is prolly a stupid off the wall thought but if you can do that then cant you use an app similiar to that ( even if you had to program it ) to detect all the mac addys and then allow you to assign specific I.P Addresses to each mac address.

Only reason I ask and I know this is most likely too little too late or whatever the saying is but basically we will have to go around all the admin machines tommorow and change all the I.P Addresses on the admin machines and would be nice if there was an easier way to do it lol.

You're crazy.

We're not changing the IP addresses, we're logging the IP addresses. There are plenty of IP scanners out there that would help, but the thing is the machine would have to be on to do it. We could get around it somehow by loading on some kind of application that would wake the machines up (they have WOL) but it wouldn't help because at the same time as checking the IP address it would be prudent to make sure that the SIMS.Net component got the last update. On top of that we need to log *where* the machine is (what room it is in). It would take an amazing application to do that ;-)

So it's not such a crazy thought- just doesn't fit the situ right now.

Why do you need to do this?

If you have a MAC address scanner, you could find the MAC addresses and enter the IP addresses as reservations in DHCP - more flexible than static IPs.

..... and as an extension to Rics suggestion you could so this with a netsh script. But as you are just logging you wont need this but I hoped it calmed your brainwaves slightly

run

 arp -a

on one of your servers (preferable the DHCP server)
and it will print the current MAC/IP mappings.

This is also a good method of finding new equipment eg switches for which the MAC is already known.
