Our science department is after some form of electronic system for stock control.
The requirements are simple:
* Input stock
* Input amounts taken out - obviously calculate new stock
* Set a minimum stock level - automated notification (email?) when this is reached
* Generate reports on stock usage and what's left, etc.
* Any other handy gubbins (e.g. making brews)
It's pretty simple stuff and can be bought but I reckon that it is probably the sort of thing that is available FOC (Opensource, GNU, etc.). Of course writing it myself is one way of doing it but what's the point in re-inventing the wheel?
Basically - I need ideas!

ERP5 is whats usually mentioned for warehouse stock control.

However its ridiciously over complicated for what you wish to do. I cannot find anything thats more focused or simplified though.

Re: Chemical Stock Control
I was asked to find / make something similar for our print cartridges so I wrote a quick VB App and it has made things a lot easier. I intend to make the front end web based eventually but if the app works?!?!

I thought it was how you find out how other places do 'it' - although it is kind of a cross-over post and I struggled to find the right place to put it.

I've found one!!!
http://sourceforge.net/projects/slims/
SLIMS is a small laboratory information management system used to maintain chemical stocks and analyze biological assays. SLIMS comes in two flavors, a single user, single file database suitable for sending to collaborators and as a multi-user database.
Does this fit the bill Ric?
