    4 On Demand

Staff are enquiring about 4 On Demand, is this something we can roll out and so forth.

Have any of you done this as yet? The application is an exe, has anyone packaged or looked at deployment as yet?

Our staffs often use BBC iPlayer to show bits of programs, for example Dragons Den in Business Studies. They would like to do the same with Chanel 4 programs.

We install it on teacher machines only, and as they ask for it. We block it for students.

@FN-Greatermanchester - Staff will have access to it only too. However, I don't wish to install it on nearly 100 members of staff machines! Our staff all like to have access to everything!

I'm thinking along the lines of deploying via GP - to only Staff OU's.

The client doesn't like us, even on our Admin, un-filtered and restricted PCs it never works for 4OD, but iPlayer works ace

@john - I must admit iPlayer wins my vote all the time! Nice and simple setup, nothing like the 4OD client!

Staff can benefit from iPlayer without our assistance at all!

I would not run that on your network. Its agent (Kontiki) will soak up bandwidth to p2p it to other users.
If by iPlayer you mean the streaming part then its okay. The download should be avoided though as both it and 4OD use the Kontiki to share what you download. The fact they use the same system actually can cause compatibility issues if they use different versions of Kontiki. Sky By PC uses Kontiki too.
I have successfully got them installed at home on one pc though but I think it was more luck then anything. I think if you install in the correct order it will work.

@ZeroHour - Thanks for your comments. I do mean the streaming part of iPlayer. I would like staff to benifit from the steaming part of 4OD. Is this not possible?

I was pretty sure all of 4OD was based on Kontiki, so if you install it and stream something chances are you will be a cache for others. Just imaging 25 idle pc's sharing out over p2p. Eveything net related could die badly.
I will have a go at the streaming part again tonight and monitor whats going where but I think it probably uses Kontiki to at least ease their bandwidth requirements at there end.

We've started to have issues because of kontiki as well. By all means stream from iplayer but wouldn't recomend installing either iplayer or 4oD, particularly not 4oD...kontiki doesn't disable easily for either and has had serious speed restriction issues on several laptops here.

Have to agree that kontiki is not very nice. When I installed the beta iplayer the kontiki client ground my system to a halt.

As for streaming 4OD online via flash like the BBC, CH4 have clips available here but it seems that for full episodes you will need to use the client software.

    Thanks everyone for your input!

I've discovered that deploying 4OD isn't the way forward! Ah well, staff will have to enjoy streaming content from the BBC!

I take it your in education,

Are you behind a corporate firewall or do you have your own on site firewall,

if so, make an exempt rule for akamaistream.net

this is the website which hosts the streaming for 4 On Demand

I wonder if it's possible to adjust firewall rules to prevent the 4OD client uploading its content to users? I'm not familure with how it works, so I've no idea what protocols it uses etc. so it's just a stab in the dark.
