    Backup

Just wondering how you all do it, I've just finished building the new domain and got it all deployed, just the backup to sort. Using one of the old servers at the other end of the site at present until the decision nas been made how to do it. Trouble is that this school does things down to a price and not what is best for the school. So how do you all do it? tape, nas, removeable drives? your thoughts please.

    Re: Backup

We backup using Backup Exec 11d to a Tandberg Data Storageloader 2U Autoloader on LTO3 Tapes.

Its expensive but you can't put a price on backups. Some say that tapes have had their day, but its tried and tested media and it Works!

    Re: Backup

We do daily full backups to external USB hard drives. Just get someone to swap them over in the morning. As Biker says tapes are well proven technology and can be easier to train people to use.

The important thing is to have a backup system in place of whatever type and to test by restoring occasionally to make sure that it is actually working.

    Re: Backup

Caddied 1TB SATA harddrives, swapped between the backup machine and a fireproof safe. The drives and caddies were around £200 each, we just needed to make sure we had a server with a nice big case to install them in, otherwise that's all we needed to buy.

    Re: Backup

I've using Backup Exec 11d hooked up to Dell PowerVault TL2000 with LTO3 tapes. it took me a while to get my head around the software as I had never used it before but once it's up and running properly it's fine.

Like you, my place is very price orientated but I eventually managed to convince them what the cost of losing all of the data should the server 'meltdown'. I asked my boss what he would do if he lost a weeks worth of work....he said he would cry. I then said that if he didn't authorise payment for a decent backup strategy he wouldn't just lose this weeks work, he would lose 'all' of his work and everybody elses. He saw my point and I had to source prices for 3 different strategies. The TL2000 won!

    Cheers
    Glenn
