Monitor folder - alert if modified

Just wondering if anyone had an idea how to do this:

There is a folder on a server that teachers put letters in that need to be emailed to parents. One of the admin staff emails them and moves the letter to a folder where I should pick it up and stick it on the website.

The problem is I can't get it in my had to keep checking the folder and the website falls behind. I know that I should more disciplined, but given that I can't seem to alter my behaviour a good solution would be to get an alert every time a letter is placed in the folder.

Any ideas if I can do this?

You can use .NET (C# or VB) to create something called a FileSystemWatcher, which you give it a target - run it and then when the event fires, get it to execute something.

Any chance that member of staff could copy you into the emails, then you know you've a file to go and find and upload?

I used to use an Excel VBA program to monitor directories/files on Video on Demand servers to track the replication of videos across the world. The FileExists FileInfo etc features worked quite well.

Visual Basic or C could do the job (and send the emails to parents instead of the admin staff)

In the current school setup, we have teaching staff deposit files into Sharepoint folders and I set Alerts on the folders for adds, edits and deletes.

You could set up the file screening to match the file type extensions with a soft filter which would then email you when a file type matching the rule is placed in the share I don't know if you can narrow it down to a particular directory rather than the whole share.
