How do you message all users at once ad hoc?

    Afternoon All

Right, how do you go about messaging all logged in users at once in an ad hoc situation, say for when a server needs a reboot over lunch, or when a network piece of software is going to be updated?

It's not often I would need such a thing really, but I'm just about to do an upgrade on BSquared, and I thought it would be great to (as with the old Net Send days) buzz a message round to all logged on machine (or even switch on machines) to say "I'm about to do x y and z" so they are aware of it.

This is for Server 2008R2 and W7 Pro Clients.

    Thanks
    Andy

We use our classroom management software (Impero) if we need to do it.

Yeah, no money for something like that sadly .. So looking for a free tool, which I know, you get what you pay for and such, but there we go ..

Yeah, looked at msg before. I'd read it as being only suitable for TS environments, but I might be wrong, I'll give it a test ..

    EDIT:
Just tested this, works great for my user when I Remote on to a server and send a message from another, however, sending a message to a client machine that I'm logged on at comes back with "user does not exist or is disconnected"

I tried to rummage through the recesses of my brain for how we used to do it on XP clients back in the day. (And way before probably)
I guess its been patched/removed/locked down in later OS revisions as it seemed to be abused by the viri of the day.

    Memory is failing me today

'twas probably Net Send or something along those lines, but as you rightly pointed out, that has been depreciated due to it's spammy abilities ..

Thanks though .. now go rest, rummaging through recesses of brains is not something to be taken lightly and should only be undertaken with proper supervision!

Cheers. I'll take a look at that later / tomorrow

    Edit:
Just taken a quick look now whilst waiting for the server in question to reboot anyway .. lol .. I'd have to create a list of computers for this option wouldn't I? Then if a particular computer isn't turned on, how gracefully does psexec fall over? I've only ever used it for singular tasks.

Fire out an email which they use all day or just hit restart without telling depending what server it is.

If only the staff here would use their e-mail .. (side note: who blocks hotmail/gmail etc to force staff to stop using their personal e-mail for work purposes?)

So net send was replaced by msg and it needs a slight bit of work (a reg tweak) to make it work on win 7. Let me know if you want that.

I did write a piece of software to handle messages, very similar to what you want, it is in the project section here.

As an alternative approach... we stick a BIG RED MESSAGE up in the middle of our intranet page - usually gets messages out fairly quickly (people look at the home page a lot) and only takes a moment to tweak the HTML file.

This isn't something we've had to do here but if staff are using personal e-mail for work I would certainly consider doing this, just for their own protection!
