    Adobe Illustrator problems

Any ideas ? User is having an issue with Illustrator CS5 on win 7 pc. Can’t set up or change my document set up as a large box appears that prevents me from seeing the proper function, and only disappears when I press escape. screenshot attached.
have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'm a long time user of Illustrator and have never seen an error quite like that.

The UI on the new document dialogue box is clearly corrupted - have you tried just hitting [enter] to commit whatever options are being given (even though they are not visible) and launch the new document? If that works can you then open the file > document setup dialogue to make changes there and use the artboard properties to change page sizes etc?

Another thing to try - see if a pre-existing AI document will open so you can bypass the New Document error - maybe if you get past it once it will reset (slim chance but worth a go). A workaround could be to use a previous document, delete the contents, format it how you want your new documents then save it as a template (.ait) to be used for creating new blank documents. Not a proper solution, but it might keep your user going for now.

Good luck - hope one of these works in some way.

    I just remembered this too.

Adobe Creative Suite products can be very sticky when it comes to un-installations, leaving all sorts of gubbins behind that can affect the software after re-installation to the same or newer versions. If your install has somehow become corrupted, then uninstall/reinstall may not be enough to get rid of the corrupted bits (technical term).

However, Adobe provide a tool for cleaning out the lingering bits and bobs after you have done an uninstall called Creative Suite Cleaner. You can read instructions and download here:

Adobe - Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool

Please read all Adobe's instructions carefully for the sequence in which to use the tool during uninstall/reinstall and make sure you back up important stuff before running it of course.

Hopefully this will be able to scrub out whatever error is causing your problem.

Try holding down ctrl-alt-shift when you start illustrator, it'll reset all preferences which usually fixes random problems.

That's a great tip from @teejay - Do this before you try any of my suggestions.

Hi Guys - thanks for replies, user could not recreate problem when I went back so got her to create blank templates as sugested in case of problems in future and also gave user the ctrl/alt/shift to try if problem re-occurs. Thanks for help! :-)
